Beginner Aquarium Setup

10 gallon setup notes

A 10 gallon aquarium is best for small peaceful fish, shrimp, snails, and easy plants. Keep stocking light, avoid fish that need long swimming space, and do not try to build a mixed community too quickly.

20 gallon setup notes

A 20 gallon aquarium is easier for many beginners because the extra water volume is more stable and gives small community fish more room. It works well for peaceful livebearers, small tetras, rasboras, corydoras, snails, shrimp-safe setups, and beginner plants.

29 gallon setup notes

A 29 gallon aquarium gives more height and room for sensible schooling groups, mixed peaceful community setups, plants, and stronger filtration. It is a better starting point if you want more than one small group of fish.

40 gallon setup notes

A 40 gallon aquarium gives beginners more flexibility for larger community fish, planted layouts, stronger filtration, and more stable water. It still needs careful stocking based on adult size, temperament, and filtration.

Cycling in plain English

Cycling means building beneficial bacteria that process fish waste. A cycled tank helps prevent ammonia and nitrite spikes that can kill fish.
