Compatibility & Stocking

Community fish rules

  • Match fish by adult size, temperament, temperature, and swimming level.
  • Peaceful does not mean compatible with everything.
  • Do not mix tiny fish with predators.

Schooling fish group size

  • Schooling fish usually do better in groups.
  • Avoid buying one or two schooling fish unless the species is already established in the tank.

Livebearer stocking notes

  • Livebearers can breed quickly.
  • Watch male/female ratios.
  • Provide plants or cover if fry survival matters.

Cichlid caution

  • Cichlids vary from peaceful to highly aggressive.
  • Do not assume all cichlids work in community tanks.
  • Plan around territory, adult size, and aggression.

Shrimp-safe tankmates

  • Many fish will eat baby shrimp.
  • Avoid aggressive or predatory fish.
  • Use moss, plants, and hiding places.

Saltwater aggression notes

  • Many saltwater fish are territorial.
  • Add order, tank size, hiding spaces, and compatibility matter.
  • Research tangs, angels, wrasses, triggers, and damsels before mixing.

Reef-safe warning

  • Reef safe, reef safe with caution, and not reef safe are not the same.
  • Some fish may bother coral, clams, shrimp, or cleanup crews.

Adult size warning

  • Buy for adult size, not juvenile size.
  • A fish that looks small on arrival can still outgrow the tank.
